Milestone in the implementation of the German government's AI strategy
To strengthen the field of artificial intelligence in particular, the new national competence center BIFOLD will receive 32 million euros in funding from the federal government. In addition, the state of Berlin is also supporting BIFOLD by funding cutting-edge research.
As part of the German government's AI strategy, a beacon of cutting-edge AI research is being created in Berlin. To this end, the new Berlin Institute for the Foundation of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) will combine the two existing AI competence centers at TU Berlin, the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and the Berlin Center for Machine Learning (BZML), and expand collaborations with other Berlin partner institutions. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is increasing the existing funding for the two centers by an additional 18 million euros, so that BIFOLD will receive a total of more than 32 million euros in funding from the federal budget between 2019 and 2022. The state of Berlin is supporting the new institute by establishing eight new AI professorships at TU Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. 3.5 million euros are already available for this in the current state budget.
The institute is involved in BIFOLD with several projects.
